Why Coffee Isn’t As Bad As You Think

by Espresso Machine on September 15, 2013

Coffee gets a lot of bad press because of the high caffeine content. What almost never get mentioned are the beneficial effects of coffee, beyond keeping you awake for longer. Caffeine is the most common psychoactive substance in the world today. It affects everything from your brain to your body. Here are a few reasons why coffee really isn’t as bad as you think.

It Increases Brain Function

Controlled trials of caffeine have shown it can increase the function of the neurotransmitters in the brain. They fire much faster and increase cognitive action. In short, they can make you more alert and more reactive. If you’re drinking coffee before a big creative meeting you could be giving your brain the boost it needs to rattle off lots of great ideas.

Coffee Helps You Lose Weight

Once you start to take in psychoactive substances like caffeine your body changes. The metabolic rate starts to go up. If someone has a high metabolic rate they can digest food quicker and mobilise the fat reserves in the body. The more fat reserves you have mobilised the faster you can burn it and the more energy you have from mobilising them in the first place.

Overall, it leads to increased physical performance and a successful weight loss and fitness regime.

Type II Diabetes

Type II diabetes is a common type of this problem. It’s linked to an inability to produce enough insulin to counter high glucose levels in the blood. Although scientists don’t really know why, a total of 18 articles with a combined half a million participants demonstrated coffee has been linked with a decrease in the risk of developing this problem.

The exact decrease has been set at 7 per cent per cup, so if you drink a cup of coffee in the morning you’re decreasing your risk by 7 per cent. Obviously, you wouldn’t binge on it due to the side effects of drinking so much, though.

Nutrients and Antioxidants

Eating coffee beans is a great way to stay healthy. The common view is eating coffee beans is the only way of taking in these nutrients. Many of them still make it into your morning cup, though. In fact, studies have shown coffee is the largest source of antioxidants in the modern diet.

It’s completely at odds with what people tend to think. Antioxidants help to fight off bacteria and viruses in your body. They give your white blood cell fighting force a boost. Nutrients are also present. These include the more niche nutrients like Riboflavin and Niacine. There are staple nutrients like potassium as well.

Only certain nutrients are eliminated during the boiling process. The rest are able to withstand these high temperatures and remain in-tact.

Overall, coffee isn’t the unhealthy drink many people assume it is. If you become addicted to caffeine it can cause more harm than good. A couple of cups each day aren’t going to enact any negative effects, though. By restricting the amount you drink you can only benefit.

John Denver is the writer of this guest post. He is an avid blogger who writes on a wide variety of topics. He just purchased the latest coffeemaker from ebay Nespresso and says it is nothing less than a boon for him as he drinks at least five to six cups of coffee in a day.
